Every once in a while, I stumble upon a comedy show that, not so much makes me laugh out loud, but makes me feel happy inside. Growing Up Fisher was one of those shows, and I was extremely disappointed when it was cancelled after only one season. Well, there is now another show that not only puts a smile on my face but, like Growing Up Fisher, it’s a show with heart.
Speechless is about the Dimeo family whose eldest son has cerebral palsy. In an effort to get him enrolled in a better school, they move to a better neighbourhood. I know that sounds nothing like a comedy but trust me, this is not a depressing soap opera… it’s a great show – seriously! The cast is great – Minnie Driver is back after her role in About A Boy, playing the kick-ass mom as usual, Mason Cook is perfect for the role of the brainy 13-year old middle child whose family gives him high blood pressure, and Micah Fowler, who has cerebral palsy in real-life, steals the show as the eldest son. This is one show I am hoping will not be cancelled anytime soon!
